Conflictions
Reminiscent of children’s taunts, not the playfulness but rather the emotional complexity and impact – feeling “afflicted” with hurtful conflicts. – RW
(Audio is the 1998 premiere performed at Turtle Bay Music School by Asmira Woodward-Page & Joyce Hammann, vlns; Ron Lawrence, vla; Tomas Ulrich, vc, NYC)
Rhythm Modes
Purchase original CD release
Recording features Moravian Philharmonic musicians: Vit Muzik, Jakab Látal, violins; Dominika Muzikova, viola; Marian Pavlik, cello.
Program Note: The “modes” in Rhythm Modes include clocklike ostinato, canonic imitation and repetitions out of phase with either the meter or another instrument’s version of the same line. These rhythmic “modes” play upon the surface of the music in a lively intertwining of motives and melodies.
2001 Concert video features: Vita Wallace & Theresa Salomon, vlns; Liuh-Wen Ting, vla; Ariane Lallemand, vc.
Walking on Wires – wind & strings
Program note
An anxious lament for love lost, borrowing musical inspiration from the plainsong, “Dies Irae.” The emotional context is sadness and futility, which transmutes into edgy feelings of anger. The metaphoric realization that came to mind was that moving on would involve something like walking barefoot across a floor covered with sharp wires. – RW
Both Bassoon & Strings, and Bass Clarinet & Strings versions are available for purchase.
